Manufacturers and networks need to do a better job by capturing the older people by explaining them the benefits of smartphones. Only 14 per cent of over-55s are smartphone users. Women are also currently less likely to use a smartphone than men, who account for 59 per cent of the market.

The challenge for the industry is to better explain the benefits of smartphone ownership to current rejecters, notably older age groups and women.

The problem is particularly acute for HTC and Nokia that appeal significantly more to men than women. A survey found that Apple and Samsung s devices appeal to both genders.
